Surefire Assignment: Being All You Can Be

For a good in-class essay prompt, I ask if the Army ad, “There’s Something About a Soldier, perpetuates stereotypes or breaks them. (It works even better if you can place it in the context of other ads, some more stereotypical and some less so.) People seem able to argue convincingly for both sides. Whatever happened to “be all you can be as a slogan? It always seemed like a good motto for teaching in general. Here this woman is being all she can be, which apparently includes being a “good (non-threatening) date and a help-mate to pilots on the flightline. As the start of a research topic, this ad can lead to statistics about women in the military today, and an analysis of America’s changing perceptions about gender roles.

What’s nice about Hood’s reflection on this advertisement is the recognition that media images aren’t always so simple as “positive or “negative—and when students are asked to evaluate media images they often say what the teacher wants to hear. In order to complicate this ad further, you could do as Hood suggests, but with one addition: ask students to find both military and non-military advertisements featuring women to provide more of a context for this ad.
